Historical Significance

• The temple was built by the great Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola I and consecrated in 1010 CE, making it over 1,000 years old. It is one of the greatest architectural achievements of the Chola Empire.
• Constructed almost entirely of granite, the temple features a majestic 216-foot (66 m) Vimana, one of the tallest temple towers in India.
• The temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 as part of the Great Living Chola Temples, recognizing its outstanding cultural and architectural significance.

Religious Importance

• The temple enshrines one of the largest Shiva Lingams in India and is an important pilgrimage centre for Shaivites.
• It is renowned for its monolithic Nandi, carved from a single stone, measuring about 6 metres long, 2.6 metres wide, and 3.7 metres high, making it one of the largest Nandi statues in the country.
• The temple continues to follow traditional Agamic worship and hosts grand celebrations during Maha Shivaratri, Pradosham, and Aippasi Annabhishekam, attracting thousands of devotees every year.

வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்பு

• இத்திருக்கோவில் மாமன்னர் முதலாம் ராஜராஜ சோழனால் கட்டப்பட்டு கி.பி. 1010 ஆம் ஆண்டு குடமுழுக்கு நடைபெற்றது. ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலான வரலாற்றைக் கொண்ட இக்கோவில் சோழப் பேரரசின் தலைசிறந்த கட்டிடக்கலைச் சாதனைகளில் ஒன்றாக விளங்குகிறது.
• முழுவதும் கருங்கற்களால் கட்டப்பட்ட இக்கோவிலின் 216 அடி (66 மீட்டர்) உயரமுடைய விமானம் இந்தியாவின் மிக உயரமான கோவில் விமானங்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.
• இக்கோவில் 1987 ஆம் ஆண்டு "வாழும் சோழர் பெருங்கோவில்கள்" (Great Living Chola Temples) என்ற பெயரில் யுனெஸ்கோ உலக பாரம்பரியச் சின்னமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. இதன் சிறப்பான பண்பாட்டு மற்றும் கட்டிடக்கலை மதிப்பிற்காக இவ்வங்கீகாரம் வழங்கப்பட்டது.

ஆன்மீக சிறப்பு

• இந்தியாவின் மிகப்பெரிய சிவலிங்கங்களில் ஒன்றை இத்திருக்கோவில் கொண்டுள்ளது. இதனால் இது சைவ சமயத்தினரின் மிக முக்கியமான புனித யாத்திரைத் தலமாக விளங்குகிறது.
• ஒரே கல்லால் செதுக்கப்பட்ட நந்தி சிலைக்காக இக்கோவில் உலகப் புகழ் பெற்றது. சுமார் 6 மீட்டர் நீளம், 2.6 மீட்டர் அகலம் மற்றும் 3.7 மீட்டர் உயரம் கொண்ட இந்நந்தி, இந்தியாவின் மிகப்பெரிய நந்தி சிலைகளில் ஒன்றாகும்.
• இன்றளவும் ஆகம முறையின்படி வழிபாடுகள் நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன. மகா சிவராத்திரி, பிரதோஷம் மற்றும் ஐப்பசி அன்னாபிஷேகம் போன்ற திருவிழாக்கள் சிறப்பாகக் கொண்டாடப்படுகின்றன. இவ்விழாக்களில் ஆண்டுதோறும் ஆயிரக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் கலந்து கொண்டு இறைவனை தரிசிக்கின்றனர்.
