Historical Significance

• The temple is believed to have originated in the 6th–7th century CE during the early Chola period and was later expanded by successive Chola rulers.
• It contains 31 stone inscriptions recording royal grants and endowments.
• The name “Thirukarukavur” means the place where life in the womb is protected, reflecting the temple’s long-standing association with fertility, safe pregnancy, and childbirth.

Religious Importance

• Revered in the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnana Sambandar, the temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams.
• The temple is world-renowned for the blessings of Sri Garbharakshambigai, who is worshipped as the divine protector of pregnancy and motherhood. Devotees seeking childbirth receive ghee prasadam, while expectant mothers receive castor oil prasadam for safe delivery, following an age-old temple tradition.
• Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Mullaivananathar, symbolizing the Lord who manifested amidst a jasmine (Mullai) forest. The temple is situated on the southern bank of the Vettar River, a branch of the Kaveri.

வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்பு

• இத்திருக்கோவில் கி.பி. 6–7 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் ஆரம்ப சோழர் காலத்தில் தோன்றியதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. பின்னர் சோழ மன்னர்களால் விரிவுபடுத்தப்பட்டு பல திருப்பணிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன.
• இக்கோவிலில் அரசர்களின் நன்கொடைகள் மற்றும் தர்மங்களைக் குறிப்பிடும் 31 கல்வெட்டுகள் காணப்படுகின்றன.
• “திருக்கருகாவூர்” என்ற பெயர் கருவில் வளரும் குழந்தையை இறைவன் பாதுகாக்கும் புனிதத் தலம் என்ற பொருளைக் குறிக்கிறது. இதனால் கருத்தரித்தல், பாதுகாப்பான கர்ப்பகாலம் மற்றும் சுகப்பிரசவம் ஆகியவற்றிற்காக உலகம் முழுவதும் இருந்து பக்தர்கள் இத்தலத்திற்கு வருகின்றனர்.

• திருஞானசம்பந்தர் அருளிய தேவாரப் பாடல்களில் போற்றப்பட்ட 275 பாடல் பெற்ற சிவஸ்தலங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்றாகும்.
• கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்கள் மற்றும் குழந்தை வரம் வேண்டுவோருக்கு அருள் புரியும் தெய்வமாக அருள்மிகு கர்ப்பரட்சாம்பிகை அம்மன் உலகப் புகழ் பெற்றவர். குழந்தை வரம் வேண்டுவோருக்கு நெய் பிரசாதமும், கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்களுக்கு சுகப்பிரசவம் நடைபெற ஆமணக்கு எண்ணெய் பிரசாதமும் வழங்கப்படும் பழமையான மரபு இக்கோவிலில் இன்று வரை கடைப்பிடிக்கப்படுகிறது.
• முல்லை மலர்கள் நிறைந்த வனத்தில் சுயம்புவாக எழுந்தருளியதால் இறைவன் "முல்லைவனநாதர்" எனப் போற்றப்படுகிறார். இத்திருத்தலம் காவிரி ஆற்றின் கிளை நதியான வெட்டாற்றின் தென்கரையில் அமைந்துள்ளது.
