Historical Significance

• The temple is believed to have ancient origins, with the present structure receiving major contributions from the Medieval Cholas and later expansions by the Nayak rulers.
• The temple stands atop an artificial hill of 60 steps, representing the 60 Tamil years in the traditional calendar.
• Swamimalai is the sacred place where Lord Murugan explained the meaning of the Pranava Mantra “Om” to Lord Shiva, earning the name Swaminatha (the Guru of the Lord).

Religious Importance

• One of the Six Abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan, making it among the holiest Murugan temples in India.
• Devotees believe worship at this temple bestows wisdom, knowledge, success in education, and spiritual enlightenment.
• At the foothill are the shrines of Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva) and Goddess Meenakshi, symbolizing the divine event where the son became the Guru of the father.

வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்பு

• இத்திருக்கோவில் தொன்மையான வரலாற்றைக் கொண்டது. தற்போதைய கோவில் அமைப்பு இடைக்காலச் சோழ மன்னர்களால் பெரிதும் வளர்ச்சியடைந்ததுடன், பின்னர் நாயக்க மன்னர்களாலும் விரிவுபடுத்தப்பட்டது.
• இக்கோவில் 60 படிகளைக் கொண்ட செயற்கை மலை மீது அமைந்துள்ளது. இந்த 60 படிகள் தமிழரின் அறுபது ஆண்டுக் காலச்சக்கரத்தை குறிக்கின்றன.
• சுவாமிமலையே, பிரணவ மந்திரமான "ஓம்" என்பதன் அர்த்தத்தை முருகப்பெருமான் சிவபெருமானுக்கு உபதேசம் செய்த புனிதத் தலமாகும். இதனால் முருகப்பெருமான் "சுவாமிநாதர்" (சுவாமிக்கே குருவானவர்) என்ற திருநாமம் பெற்றார்.

ஆன்மீக சிறப்பு

• முருகப்பெருமானின் ஆறுபடை வீடுகளில் ஒன்றாக விளங்கும் இத்திருத்தலம், இந்தியாவின் மிகவும் புனிதமான முருகன் கோவில்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.
• இங்கு வழிபடும் பக்தர்களுக்கு ஞானம், கல்வியில் சிறப்பு, அறிவாற்றல், வெற்றி மற்றும் ஆன்மீக உயர்வு கிடைக்கும் என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது.
• மலையடிவாரத்தில் அருள்மிகு சுந்தரேஸ்வரர் (சிவபெருமான்) மற்றும் அருள்மிகு மீனாட்சி அம்மன் சன்னதிகள் அமைந்துள்ளன. மகன் தந்தைக்கு குருவாக விளங்கிய தெய்வீக நிகழ்வை இவை நினைவூட்டுகின்றன.
