Historical Significance

• The temple is believed to be over 1,300 years old, with the original structure dating to the Chola period (9th century CE). It was later expanded and renovated by the Thanjavur Nayak rulers during the 16th century.
• According to Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva manifested here as Adi Kumbeswarar from the divine pot (Amrita Kumbha) containing the seeds of creation after the cosmic deluge (Pralaya). This sacred legend gave the town its name, Kumbakonam.
• The temple features a magnificent nine-tiered Rajagopuram, standing about 128 feet high, and is regarded as the largest and oldest Shiva temple in Kumbakonam.

Religious Importance

• The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, glorified in the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnana Sambandar, Appar, and Sundarar.
• It is the principal Shiva temple associated with the world-famous Mahamaham Festival, celebrated once every twelve years, when millions of devotees gather to take a holy dip in the Mahamaham Tank before worshipping Lord Adi Kumbeswarar.
• Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Adi Kumbeswarar grants prosperity, spiritual upliftment, and relief from sins and obstacles.

வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்பு

• இத்திருக்கோவில் 1,300 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலான பழமையானதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. இதன் முதன்மை கட்டிடம் கி.பி. 9-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் சோழர் காலத்தில் அமைக்கப்பட்டது. பின்னர் 16-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் தஞ்சாவூர் நாயக்க மன்னர்களால் விரிவுபடுத்தப்பட்டு திருப்பணிகள் செய்யப்பட்டன.
• இந்துக் புராணங்களின்படி, உலகப் பிரளயத்திற்குப் பின் படைப்பின் விதைகள் அடங்கிய அமிர்தக் கும்பத்திலிருந்து சிவபெருமான் ஆதி கும்பேஸ்வரராக இத்தலத்தில் எழுந்தருளினார். இந்தப் புனித ஐதீகத்தின் காரணமாகவே இவ்வூர் "கும்பகோணம்" எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது.
• சுமார் 128 அடி உயரமுடைய ஒன்பது நிலை ராஜகோபுரத்தைக் கொண்ட இத்திருக்கோவில், கும்பகோணத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள மிகப் பழமையானதும் மிகப் பெரியதுமான சிவாலயமாகப் போற்றப்படுகிறது.

ஆன்மீக சிறப்பு

• திருஞானசம்பந்தர், திருநாவுக்கரசர் (அப்பர்), சுந்தரர் ஆகியோரின் தேவாரப் பாடல்களில் போற்றப்பட்ட 275 பாடல் பெற்ற சிவஸ்தலங்களில் இத்தலம் ஒன்றாகும்.
• உலகப் புகழ்பெற்ற மகாமக விழாவுடன் தொடர்புடைய முக்கிய சிவாலயமாக இக்கோவில் விளங்குகிறது. பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒருமுறை நடைபெறும் மகாமகத் திருவிழாவின் போது, இலட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் மகாமகக் குளத்தில் புனித நீராடி பின்னர் ஆதி கும்பேஸ்வரரை தரிசிக்கின்றனர்.
