Historical Significance

The temple dates back to the Chola period (9th–10th century CE) and was later expanded by the Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers. Numerous inscriptions record royal grants and renovations.
According to legend, Chandra (the Moon God) worshipped Lord Shiva here to be relieved from a curse, after which the Lord came to be known as Someswarar ("Lord of Soma" or "Lord of the Moon").
The temple is also known as Kudandhai Karonam and is one of the three famous Karonam Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.

Religious Importance

Revered in the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnana Sambandar and Appar, this temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams.
It is one of the twelve Shiva temples associated with the Mahamaham Festival, celebrated once every twelve years in Kumbakonam.
Devotees worship Lord Someswarar for relief from Chandra Dosha, peace of mind, prosperity, and good health.

வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்பு

இத்திருக்கோவில் கி.பி. 9–10 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் சோழர் காலத்தில் தோன்றியதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. பின்னர் விஜயநகரப் பேரரசு மற்றும் நாயக்க மன்னர்களால் விரிவுபடுத்தப்பட்டு திருப்பணிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. பல கல்வெட்டுகள் அரசர்களின் நன்கொடைகள் மற்றும் திருப்பணிகளை பதிவு செய்கின்றன.
புராணக் கதையின்படி, சந்திரபகவான் சாபவிமோசனம் பெற இத்தலத்தில் சிவபெருமானை வழிபட்டார். அதன் காரணமாக இறைவன் "சோமேஸ்வரர்" (சந்திரனின் இறைவன்) என்ற திருநாமத்தால் போற்றப்படுகிறார்.
இக்கோவில் "குடந்தைக் காரோணம்" என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. தமிழ்நாட்டின் புகழ்பெற்ற மூன்று காரோணத் திருத்தலங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்றாகும்.

ஆன்மீக சிறப்பு

திருஞானசம்பந்தர் மற்றும் திருநாவுக்கரசர் (அப்பர்) அருளிய தேவாரப் பாடல்களில் போற்றப்பட்ட 275 பாடல் பெற்ற சிவஸ்தலங்களில் இத்தலம் ஒன்றாகும்.
கும்பகோணத்தில் பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒருமுறை நடைபெறும் மகாமகத் திருவிழாவுடன் தொடர்புடைய பன்னிரண்டு சிவாலயங்களில் இக்கோவிலும் ஒன்றாகும்.
சந்திர தோஷ நிவர்த்தி, மன அமைதி, செல்வ வளம் மற்றும் நல்ல ஆரோக்கியம் வேண்டி பக்தர்கள் அருள்மிகு சோமேஸ்வரரை வழிபடுகின்றனர்.
