The temple is believed to be over 1,500 years old, with the present structure receiving major contributions from the Medieval Cholas and later expansions by the Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers.
The magnificent 11-tier Rajagopuram, rising about 173 feet (53 metres), is one of the tallest temple towers in Tamil Nadu.
The sanctum is uniquely designed in the form of a celestial chariot drawn by horses and elephants, symbolizing Lord Vishnu's divine descent to marry Goddess Komalavalli.

Revered in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham by several Alwars, the temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and among the most sacred Vaishnavite shrines in India.
It is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams, the five sacred Vishnu temples situated along the River Kaveri.
The temple is closely associated with the Mahamaham Festival held once every twelve years at Kumbakonam, attracting lakhs of devotees from across the country.

இத்திருக்கோவில் 1,500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலான பழமையானதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. தற்போதைய கோவில் சோழர் காலத்தில் பெருமளவில் கட்டப்பட்டு, பின்னர் விஜயநகரப் பேரரசு மற்றும் நாயக்க மன்னர்களால் விரிவுபடுத்தப்பட்டது.
சுமார் 173 அடி (53 மீட்டர்) உயரம் கொண்ட 11 நிலை ராஜகோபுரம் தமிழ்நாட்டின் மிக உயரமான கோபுரங்களில் ஒன்றாக விளங்குகிறது.
கருவறை குதிரைகள் மற்றும் யானைகள் இழுக்கும் தெய்வீக தேரின் வடிவில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இது, கோமளவல்லி தாயாரை திருமணம் செய்ய திருமால் பூமிக்கு எழுந்தருளியதை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.

ஆழ்வார்கள் அருளிய நாலாயிர திவ்யப் பிரபந்தத்தில் மங்களாசாசனம் பெற்ற 108 திவ்யதேசங்களில் இத்தலம் ஒன்றாகும். இந்தியாவின் மிகப் புனிதமான வைணவத் திருத்தலங்களில் இதுவும் சிறப்பிடம் பெற்றுள்ளது.
காவிரி நதிக்கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள புனிதமான ஐந்து பஞ்சரங்க க்ஷேத்திரங்களில் இத்திருக்கோவில் ஒன்றாகும்.
கும்பகோணத்தில் பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒருமுறை நடைபெறும் மகாமகத் திருவிழாவுடன் நெருங்கிய தொடர்புடைய இக்கோவிலுக்கு நாடு முழுவதும் இருந்து இலட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் வருகை தருகின்றனர்.
