Historical Significance

• The temple was built during the 12th century CE by the Chola emperor Rajaraja Chola II and is regarded as one of the finest masterpieces of Chola architecture.
• It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Great Living Chola Temples, along with the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur and the Gangaikondacholisvaram Temple.
• The temple is renowned for its exquisite stone carvings, intricately sculpted pillars, and the famous musical stone steps, which produce different musical notes when tapped.

Religious Importance

• According to legend, Airavata, the white elephant of Lord Indra, worshipped Lord Shiva here to regain its original white colour after being cursed. Hence, the deity came to be known as Airavatesvara.
• The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, glorified in the Tevaram hymns of Tirugnana Sambandar and Appar.
• The temple's front Rajagambhira Mandapam is designed as a magnificent stone chariot drawn by horses, making it one of the most celebrated examples of Dravidian temple architecture.

வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்பு

• இத்திருக்கோவில் கி.பி. 12-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் சோழப் பேரரசர் இரண்டாம் ராஜராஜ சோழனால் கட்டப்பட்டது. இது சோழர்களின் கட்டிடக் கலைக்கு சிறந்த எடுத்துக்காட்டாகப் போற்றப்படுகிறது.
• தஞ்சாவூர் பிரகதீஸ்வரர் திருக்கோவில் மற்றும் கங்கைகொண்டசோழபுரம் பிரகதீஸ்வரர் திருக்கோவிலுடன் இணைந்து, "வாழும் சோழர் பெருங்கோவில்கள்" (Great Living Chola Temples) என்ற பெயரில் யுனெஸ்கோ உலக பாரம்பரியச் சின்னமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
• இக்கோவில் நுணுக்கமான கற்சிற்பங்கள், அழகிய செதுக்கப்பட்ட தூண்கள் மற்றும் தட்டும்போது வெவ்வேறு இசை ஒலிகளை எழுப்பும் புகழ்பெற்ற இசைப் படிக்கட்டுகளுக்காக உலகப் புகழ் பெற்றதாகும்.

ஆன்மீக சிறப்பு

• புராணக் கதையின்படி, இந்திரனின் வெள்ளை யானையான ஐராவதம் சாபவிமோசனம் பெற்று தனது இயல்பான வெண்மையை மீட்க இத்தலத்தில் சிவபெருமானை வழிபட்டது. அதனால் இங்குள்ள இறைவன் "ஐராவதேஸ்வரர்" என்ற திருநாமத்தால் போற்றப்படுகிறார்.
• திருஞானசம்பந்தர் மற்றும் திருநாவுக்கரசர் (அப்பர்) அருளிய தேவாரப் பாடல்களில் போற்றப்பட்ட 275 பாடல் பெற்ற சிவஸ்தலங்களில் இத்தலம் ஒன்றாகும்.
• இக்கோவிலின் முன்புறத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள ராஜகம்பீர மண்டபம் குதிரைகள் இழுக்கும் கற்தேரின் வடிவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இது திராவிடக் கோவில் கட்டிடக் கலையின் சிறந்த படைப்புகளில் ஒன்றாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது.
